Lightning to Ethernet Adapter

At Last... An Easy Way to Connect Lightning devices to Ethernet

Until recently it has been difficult to connect an iPad or iPhone to ethernet.  The new Lightning ethernet adapters from Redpark solve this problem. They connect an iPad or iPhone to ethernet and power.  They are instantly recognized by iOS as a native network connection that can be used by any iOS app.

In recent years the recommended way to connect an iOS Lightning device to ethernet has been to plug together a handful of adapters — a USB camera adapter, a USB hub, a USB ethernet adapter, and a Lightning power adapter (plus, of course, a Lightning to USB cable).  If you plugged all of these items together in exactly the right order you could get things to work. But this created a large mess of adapters and cables!

The new ethernet adapters from Redpark offer a much easier approach.  Two versions of the adapter are available. One uses Power over Ethernet (PoE) as the power source. The other uses an AC power adapter as the power source.  Both of these adapters are licensed under Apple’s “Made for iPhone” (MFi) program.

Using the Lightning to Ethernet Adapters

With a Redpark ethernet adapter you can connect iPhone to ethernet in 3 easy steps:

1 - Connect the Redpark adapter to power

If you have a local AC power outlet plug the Redpark adapter into the power outlet using the power adapter that Redpark provides.

If you are using power over ethernet (PoE) as the power source use an ethernet cable to connect the Redpark adapter to a PoE enabled switch or PoE injector.  A Cat 5e or Cat 6A ethernet cable is recommended.

2 - Connect the Redpark adapter to the Lightning device using a Lightning to USB Micro B cable

A Lightning to USB Micro B cable is available from Redpark in several lengths. Or you can use a Lightning to USB Micro B cable made by other brands (as long as the cable is MFI-certified).

3 - Configure the ethernet connection using the Settings app on your iPad or iPhone

Once the ethernet adapter is connected to power and to your iPhone or iPad, “Ethernet” will appear in the Settings app in between “Wi-Fi” and “Bluetooth” as shown below.  (Requires iOS 10 or later.)

Select “Ethernet” in order to access the ethernet configuration details. The Ethernet connection can be configured to use either DHCP or a static IP address. The default setting is DHCP. If you need to enter a Static IP address please click the Static IP button and enter the configuration settings for your device and network.

The Lightning to etherent adapter is now ready to use!
