Lightning Ethernet+Power Adapter (L4-NETP)

The Redpark Ethernet+Power Adapter connects an iPad or iPhone to ethernet and power. It is designed for use in POS systems, kiosks, automation control systems and other use cases where connection to a wired network interface and power are required.

The Ethernet+Power Adapter is a specialty USB Ethernet Adapter. It provides a private ethernet interface that is compatible with an iOS app that makes use of a Redpark Ethernet SDK. “ENET Browser” (web browser), “Luminair” (lighting control app), “SecureCRT” and “Get Console” (terminal emulators) are now available in the App Store.

Q: Why don’t all apps work with the Adapter?
A: Apple does not currently publish a way for accessories to access iOS’ native network stack via the Lightning connector. Therefore we needed to develop a 2nd network stack that is used by the adapter. Only apps which use our RedSocket SDK are able to communicate with the 2nd network stack. So only apps which use this SDK are able to communicate with the cable.

Q: Are there functional disadvantages to using a 2nd network stack?
A: For the most part — no. In fact there is an advantage (as explained in the next item in this FAQ list).

Q: Can the Adapter be used at the same time as WiFi or 3G/4G/LTE?
A: Yes. Since the Ethernet+Power Adapter makes use of its own network stack — it does not impact your use of iOS’ native network stack. An app is able to use both network connections at the same time if there is a need to do so.

Q: Is there full control over networking?
A: Yes. An app (via the RedSocket SDK) can fully configure the network connection. Both static IP addresses and DHCP are supported.

Q: What is the maximum bandwidth of the ethernet connection?
A: About 35 Mbps.

Q: Can I develop my own apps?
A: Yes. The RedSocket SDK is available for free download from the Developer Tools page on this website. Apps that you develop may be deployed via the App Store — or they may be deployed privately under the terms of a Personal, Education or Enterprise Developers License.

Q: Can an app access raw ethernet frames?
A: Yes. We have an alternative SDK that delivers raw ethernet frames to an app. If you have a need for this SDK, please contact using the contact form in the sidebar.

Q: What cable is used to connect to the iPad?
A: You can use Apple’s standard USB Lightning Cable or can use any MFI certified USB Lightning Cable.

Q: Why isn’t the Lightning cable built into the Adapter?
A: Using an Apple Lightning cable or an MFI-certified Lightning cable provides you with maximum flexibility. This enables you to select the cable length, color and Lightning connector style (straight vs right angle) that is best for your use case — minimizing installation and maintenance issues in the field.

Q: What are the characteristics of the power adapter?
A: The Ethernet+Power Adapter includes a 1.6A 12V external power adapter. Many factors including ripple and noise, switching frequency and efficiency were critical to the selection of this power supply. (You should not assume that any 12V power source is acceptable.)

Q: Can the power adapter be used in markets outside of the United States?
A: Yes, the power adapter is a switching power adapter (100-240v). In the United States the Ethernet+Power Adapter is shipped with a USA style power cord. Our reseller partners in other markets (i.e. Europe, Japan, Australia / New Zealand) offer power cords that are appropriate for their local markets.

Q: Can I connect the Adapter to any Ethernet hub or switch?
A: The Adapter supports a 100 Mbps Ethernet connection. It is compatible with all hubs and switches that support 100 Mbps Ethernet.

Q: Does the Adapter have LEDs to display network status?
A: Yes. There is a power LED as well as LEDs to display network link status and network activity.

Q: Does the Adapter have a unique MAC address?
A: Yes. Each Adapter is programmed with a unique MAC address during the manufacturing process.

Q: What version of iOS is required?
A: iOS 9.0.x or later.

Q: How can I tell if my iOS device recognizes the Adapter?
A: Open the “Settings” app on your iOS device. Select “General”, then “About”. If the Ethernet+Power Adapter is connected properly, it will appear in the list shown.

Q: How do I know what version of firmware the cable is using?
A: Once you have located the Ethernet+Power Adapter in the “Settings” App, select the Ethernet+Power Adapter to view its parameters.
